Each of us is enrobed by our various identities, which hang around us like cloaks off our shoulders. These identities all serve the same purpose — they make us recognizable as one thing or another, allowing us to be seen and known in the world.

Perhaps this is why we cling so strongly to the many mantles that we wrap around our vulnerable selves. Identity expresses our selfhood, and steadies us in an unsteady world. Identity gives comfort and reassurance and meaning.

But there are times when our carefully worn identities must be shed. We begin to outgrow them, or they become too heavy and burdensome to continue wearing. They twist around our legs like sodden blankets, impeding our movement and making us weary.

I find myself in such a predicament, caught in the tangle of old and emerging identities.
