I remember late last summer I sat in my parched garden and watched a cloud of dust float upwards into the still air. It shimmered momentarily, looking like a galaxy forming within a miniature cosmos. My chickens — all five of them — were scratching in the dry earth, and I watched in wonder as they created this dusty, mica-filled world with their persistent feet. The dust clouds seemed to steam up out of a cauldron made of thirsty earth and hungry hens. I watched, transfixed.
The swirling dust must have captured my attention so deeply because I long had the sense that a part of me had been turning to dust, too…
